A tidy chin for the man of the house

Thành grows a beard the way some men take up hobbies, seasonally and with great optimism. Every few months it arrives, is admired, passes through a distinguished week, and then crosses the invisible line into what Kẹo once called "dad going camping". The old clippers were part of the problem. They had two settings, too short and not short enough, and the space between them was where all the arguments with the bathroom mirror happened.

With a certain gift-giving Sunday on the calendar this month, I replaced them early. He is not a man who waits well and neither, it turns out, am I.

The King C. Gillette Beard Trimmer PRO has a little dial with forty lengths, half a millimetre apart, which sounds like too many choices until you watch a man find his exact number and stop fiddling forever. His is eleven. He announced it from the bathroom like a lottery result. It is cordless, charges from a cable like a phone, and rinses under the tap, and the distinguished week has quietly become a distinguished month.

It holds a bit over four stars across several hundred reviews, and the happy ones say what Thành says, that dialling a length beats hunting for the right plastic comb in a drawer. The unhappy ones are worth reading too, and I have folded what they taught us into the notes below rather than pretend the box arrives perfect.

Check the box the day it arrives

The set is meant to include the trimmer, a brush, two combs, a charger and a spare T-shaped blade. More than one buyer opened theirs to find the spare blade missing, and Amazon is far more helpful about that in week one than in month three. Ours arrived complete, but I had read enough to count the parts on the kitchen table first, like checking a deck of cards.

The guard has one rule

Seat the comb guard until it clicks before the trimmer touches anything you love. A few reviewers learned this on their own faces. Thành now does a small press-and-wiggle check that takes two seconds and has so far kept eleven from ever becoming three.

About the battery

Most people, my husband included, find the charge lasts weeks of normal trims. A small number had batteries fade within months, so use it a few times soon after buying rather than saving it for best, while the return window is still open. It also works less happily plugged in than charged, so treat the cable as a filling station and not a leash.

The beard is currently in its best season on record. I take partial credit, the dial takes the rest.
