The pillow I had to unmake before it worked

It arrived enormous. I lifted it out of the box and it held its shape like a loaf of bread fresh from the tin, far too full to actually rest a head on, and for a moment I thought I'd ordered the wrong thing entirely. The instructions said to unzip it and take some of the filling out, which felt strange, taking apart something I'd just bought before I'd even used it once.
So I sat on the bedroom floor one afternoon with Nấm napping down the hall, unzipped the cover, and pulled out handfuls of the shredded foam inside a little at a time, testing the loft against my own neck between handfuls, the way you'd taste a soup while it's still adjusting to salt.
It took three rounds of this before it felt right, softer than I'd have guessed I wanted, but holding its shape once I lay down properly rather than collapsing flat the way our old pillows had started to. One side of the cover is cool to the touch, the kind of cool that actually lasts once your head has been on it a while rather than warming through in ten minutes the way most "cooling" pillows have, in my experience.
Thành, a hot sleeper his whole life, tried mine one night out of curiosity and has been quietly borrowing it since, which I've decided not to make a thing of, though I've noticed.
The cover comes off and washes on its own, which matters more now than it used to, before children left their marks on everything within reach of a bed. I gave up some of the excess foam that afternoon on the floor and gained, unexpectedly, the best night's sleep I'd had in a while.
